座頭鯨來到香港 A Humpback Whale Comes to Hong Kong

Translated by Helen Wallimann

A Humpback Whale comes to Hong Kong 座頭鯨來到香港

They do not know
that your ancestors already used to come here.
(They keep asking: Is it true there was once
a view on the open sea from here?)
They also don't know that you've come to look for traces of your ancestors
What could you possibly find here?
This is a city that's good at forgetting
They don't think much of themselves
They feel nothing particularly important could ever happen here
Secretly rejoicing at the chance of picking up something on the cheap
they go out to sea to steal a look
so as to have something to boast about at dinner next day
That's enough for them
In daily life you mustn't go beyond conventional limits
At meals you mustn't use bowls that are too big
If you really need to swim
a child's pool will do
If you need anything, please first fill out a form
If you have some project or other, stand in line and take your turn
If you call in, be prepared to face a bag of tricks
The way you burst in on other people is really bad manners
however no one would openly criticise you
They wait and see if there isn't some advantage to be gained
if they can't have a share in the pot
buy a cut-price little inflatable plastic whale
a glimpse of the sea on easy terms
be in the vicinity of important world events
take a photo
They never in the least expected
and they could never believe
that you'd come because of this place
that you'd come because of them
and that you'd come to bring them the ocean's warning

2009
On 18 March 2009 a humpback whale was sighted near Lamma Island
